As part of the School of Design's 2015-2016 "HOW DO YOU DESIGN THE FUTURE?" lecture series, Lucy Kimbell will present "Studios for Society? How Design Schools Can Reconfigure Public Matters" at 5 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Forbes Avenue. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Kimbell is director of the Innovation Insights Hub, University of the Arts, London. During her presentation, she will revisit the studio, the core site for art and design practices. With increasing interest in policy circles in experimentation to address complex social issues, design thinking and service design are held up as practices that can help unlock creativity and generate solutions. Drawing on examples including the UK government’s Policy Lab and in local government, Lucy will explore what studio-like practices offer to service designers and policy innovators. She will reflect on the implications for design institutions - how they teach, how they research and who they think their publics are.
